Itinerary
El Caminito del Rey is an aerial path built on the walls of the Gaitanes Gorge. It is a road attached to the gorge with a length of 3 kilometers that has long stretches and a width of just 1 meter. It begins in the municipality of Ardales, crosses the one of Antequera, and concludes in El Chorro (Álora), Málaga province.
This road is hung on the vertical walls of the gorge and at an average distance of 100 meters above the river.
This trail was built because the Chorro Hydroelectric Society, which owns the Salto del Gaitanejo and Salto del Chorro, needed access between both “waterfalls” to facilitate both the passage of maintenance operators and the transport of materials and surveillance thereof. The work began in 1901 and concluded in 1905. The road began along the Renfe train tracks and ran through the Gaitanes Gorge, communicating and facilitating the passage between both sides. To inaugurate this great work, King Alfonso XIII moved in 1921 to the place in the dam of the Count of Guadalhorce crossing the previously constructed road. It was from this moment when people began to call that road “Caminito del Rey”, a name that is maintained today. One of the best known parts of the Caminito is the catwalk in the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes. This cantilever is perfectly visible from the railroad and everyone who looks at it is admired of its risky construction and the picturesque landscapes that are glimpsed from there. From the road that connects Álora with El Chorro, and at the entrance of the Gorge, you can see a small and picturesque bridge that joins the walkway that runs along both walls. From the bridge follow the pedestrian path installed on the vertical rock that ends at the railway line from Cordoba to Malaga.
The Gorge of the Gaitanes is located in the western part of the Betic Mountain Range and, as a whole, the canyon has, in certain sectors, walls more than 300 meters high and with widths less than 10 meters. It is basically excavated in limestones and dolomites of the Jurassic, also existing in the area rocky outcrops of the Miocene. The most spectacular morphological aspect is the vertical stratification of the limestones that the river has been drilling and that offers a cut.
In the area of the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes there are about twenty cavities, some of them hanging several tens of meters above the course of the river, and whose evolution has been affected by the progressive engagement of the Guadalhorce river, which has deepened the gorge in successive stages.Among the various units present are a formation of conglomerates and calcarenites, Miocene sediments that present beautiful sedimentary structures, some fossil remains of whales and also some “Taffoni” sandstone formations and which consist of rounded sandstone headlands in which erosion has excavated a cave or shelter.
