The Alpujarra is one of the most visited areas in the province of Granada. According to the legends, the place is famous for being such a remote place. Furthermore, until recently, the place was almost inaccessible because of its poorly communicated mountainous and picturesque landscape.
The place mostly has not change since the Arab domination and still is the retains the original Berber architecture, unique in Spain.
It is only in the late nineteenth century that the artists, bohemians and travelers began to venture there. It is obvious that The Alpujarra of Granada exerces an unmatched fascination by many foreigners.
Soportujar, the Witches’ village!:
Soportujar shows are one of the most characteristic architectural ensembles of the Alpujarra. Thanks to its numerous ‘tinaos’ or arcades, a kind of passageways that, due to the slope of the land, form the streets as they pass under the houses.
It is worth highlighting the anthropological tradition of Sorcerers and Witches of Soportújar, where we can find the Cueva del Ojo de la Bruja or The Era of the Covens.
